James D. Elliott, Jr.
Executive Director

Jim Elliott founded the Charleston Raptor Center in 1991 in response to the hundreds of birds of prey injured in South Carolina each year. The organization’s name was changed to South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey in 1995 to accommodate the Center’s expanding scope of programs and services. In July, 1995, with more than twenty years of experience in the field of commercial real estate, Jim took leave from his professional career in order to manage the Center on a full-time basis. Over the past twelve   years, the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey has emerged as one of the most highly regarded centers in the United States.

Jim completed a formal internship in the care of raptors with the Carolina Raptor Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. He has participated in numerous professional rehabilitation and veterinary symposia covering ecology, care, housing, and surgery for raptors. He has studied and consulted extensively with the leading raptor centers both in the United States and abroad, including the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program at Colorado State University, the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota at St. Paul, and the National Birds of Prey Center in the U.K.

Jim is a member of the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association, the International Wildlife Rehabilitators Council, and the Raptor Research Foundation. He was the recipient of the 1998 Wildlife Conservation Award given by the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, and he received the 2001 Environmental Awareness Award given by the Governor of the State of South
Carolina.
